The Blessing of the Nymphs: Ancient Greek Water Magic for Cleansing and Connection

Awaken to the Ancient Greek Water Priestess Arts with Elyse Welles, a native Greek priestess and initiate in the eclectic Faery Tradition. In this experiential workshop, Elyse introduces you to the power of water as the ancient Greeks knew it. Bio: Elyse Welles is a Greek-Egyptian and American earth intuitive Priestess. Initiated in the eclectic Faery Tradition & holding an MA with a focus in spiritual studies, she is a teacher of the lost Earth Priestess Arts of the Mediterranean where she hails from. The ancient connection between song and water: A lesson from the Sirens

In this lecture, we will remember the ancient connection between song and water, so easily forgotten in a world where the act of singing is air-focused. Water has always informed the act of singing. Diving into the archives on singing, we find metaphors of how water moves woven into traditional singing pedagogy. According to lore, we also find the best singers in the world, not on land, but in the water: thousand-year-old myths across cultures feature creatures in water who sing songs of enchantment. In our time together, we will approach water songstresses like the Sirens as if they are our singing teachers. They will invite us to bring our singing closer to water. They will remind us that when we sing, we’re always singing to a body of water, whether that is our own or outside of us. Through entering depictions of these mythical scenes, through studying diagrams of different bodies of water as well as through vocal exercises, the water songstresses will take us on a journey of illumination, opening our cymatic vision to seeing and feeling the patterns that are made as their and our songs weave into bodies of water. A meld of the singing mysteries, of liquid and vocal magic, this lecture provides a visual context for your sounding practice, magnifying what’s going on when you sound on the unseen level, from one body of water to another. You will leave having more insight (literally) into what is happening when you are singing, having also taken a moment to reflect on how you desire to express and wield your unique sound current in the world, for the benefit of all waters. Bring three small bowls of wild water. Be in a space where you feel comfortable doing gentle sounding.

Bio: Sophia Edlund, PhD, is a voice practitioner-researcher, artist, mystic, singer, sound healer and teacher, who began her journey with water through song. At an early age, Sophia was drawn to mythical scenes of Sirens and mermaids singing songs in the water. She devoted ten years in academia to diving deeper into these scenes, while also seeking an answer to the question: ‘what is singing?’ In 2023, she completed a practice-based doctorate on the enchanting power of voice. Next to her research, Sophia is passionate about connecting people to the powerful currents that are their voices, in activating their songs and unlocking new directions for their songs to flow. She has taught Undergraduate students, arts practitioners, voice artists and teachers. She also coaches one-to-one. Sophia currently weaves, writes and teaches from Sweden about vocal magic and vocal wounds, bringing in ecological, mythical and feminine-based approaches to her voice work. She serves through the Voice Water Temple, a space helping people to connect to Siren and mermaid song medicine.

Through meditation and visualization, we will journey to the Ocean’s edge to ritualize this one sweet life and lay our love in the hands of the Nereids, the fifty sacred daughters of the Greek Father of the Sea, Nereus and the Oceanid Doris. Each Sea Goddess Nymph daughter was born exuding the immense beauty of the Sea and lived devoted to its protection. The Nereids, each born with a their own magickal gift of healing, serve the Ocean and all of Her Creations. In the ancient days of Greece, altars of offering were built in honor of these Daughters of the Sea that were believed to protects sea faring souls and ensure their safe return to the harbor of their home. Born of water, humans carry the longing to belong, to be within the energy of home, we each seek a safe harbor to return to. The Nereids teach us to trust that our safe harbor is within our own sweet souls. They teach us that our healing begins within and offer their own hands for us to return home upon when we are in need of support; if we will only take that first step forward, we will not falter because the Nereids love, and support is beneath each sacred and courageous step.
